5 Most Uncommon Requested Features in an Expedition Build
Inside the Unique World of Custom Expedition Vehicles
At ACME Overland, every expedition truck we build is a reflection of the person driving it. Our process is deeply personal, hands-on, and tailored down to the smallest detail. While many of our builds include popular features like spacious beds, overhead storage, or solar power systems, we also love taking on the unexpected.
Here are five of the most uncommon (and coolest) features we've built into our custom expedition vehicles—and why they just might inspire your next rig.
1. A Separate Freezer… for Dog Food
Yes, you read that right. One of our clients travels extensively with their dog and wanted to ensure they could bring along weeks of raw dog food without compromising their own food storage space. The solution? A fully integrated, dedicated freezer built into the rig specifically for their pup’s meals. It’s a small touch that makes a huge difference for pet owners who don’t want to compromise while adventuring off-grid.
2. Custom JBL Speaker Mounts
This client had a favorite JBL speaker they used everywhere—from driving to setting up camp. So we got creative. We designed custom mounts for the speaker in both the cab and the living space using sleek mini bungee cords that held the speaker securely while still allowing for easy removal. The result? Seamless transitions from road-trip playlists to campsite vibes without losing sound quality or style.
3. Roof Rack Lounge with Mattress & Cup Holders
Sometimes, sleeping under the stars is just too tempting to pass up. For one adventurous client, we reworked the cab roof rack into a stargazer’s dream—outfitting it to hold a full mattress complete with mounted cup holders. Turning it into a rooftop lounge of sorts. Perfect for warm nights off-grid with nothing but sky above you.
4. Oversized Storage Box
When traveling with the whole crew, space matters. One client, building a rig for extended road trips with their family, needed an alternative to standard modular storage. We designed and fabricated a large, powder-coated aluminum box fitted into the rear of the truck. It offers organized space for everyone’s gear, bags, and essentials—without cluttering the living quarters. Durable, clean, and functional, it’s a smart solution for big adventures.
5. Pop-Out Panoramic Window
This was one of our favorite creative challenges. The client’s build had a compact living area due to the double cab configuration in the front. To open up the space without changing the layout, they suggested a panoramic pop-out window. We ran with it—and the result was a dramatic boost in light, airflow, and atmosphere. When open, it invites the outside in; when closed, it keeps things insulated and secure. A simple yet transformative touch.
6. Obelix
We couldn’t write this blog post without mentioning one of the most unique things we’ve ever done for a truck. One client requested a custom vinyl wrap featuring Obelix, a beloved cartoon character from the 1960s European comic series Asterix. Obelix, known for his strength and loyalty, was the defender of his village—and a personal childhood favorite of the client. But the connection runs deeper: the client’s father worked at the publishing house that created the cartoon in Germany. Adding Obelix to the truck wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was a heartfelt homage to his father and childhood memories. Now, “Obelix” rolls proudly across continents, carrying not just gear, but a piece of family legacy.
