Inside One of Our Biggest Builds Yet: A Custom Mercedes-Benz SK 1224 Expedition Truck

At ACME Overland, every build we take on is a chance to craft something truly exceptional—designed not just for off-grid capability, but for the people who will call it home on the road. Our latest custom expedition truck, built on the Mercedes-Benz SK 1224 chassis, is a perfect example of what happens when rugged performance meets tailored luxury.

This build was a major milestone for us. It’s packed with thoughtful details, engineered for long-term adventure, and ready to take on nearly any terrain—whether you're heading into the mountains, across deserts, or deep into the wilderness.

Why the Mercedes-Benz SK 1224?

The Mercedes SK 1224 is known for its reliability, power, and off-road ability. It’s a dual-cab platform, meaning there’s space up front for your crew—whether that’s your family, friends, or your four-legged companions. The cab alone offers a strong foundation, but what really makes this vehicle shine is the custom expedition box we built behind it.

Spacious Dual Cab

Designed to fit multiple passengers (and/or pups) with ease, the dual cab layout makes this vehicle ideal for extended travel with others. Air-ride adjustable seats add to the driving comfort, especially when you're covering long distances or navigating rough terrain.

Due to the unique area and large space, this is easily one of our favorite aspects of this build. But let’s jump into some other features we’re stoked to share about.

Panoramic Living Window

Inside the living space, one of the standout features is the panoramic pop-out window. It opens up the entire interior—letting in light, air, and stunning views—while making the space feel significantly larger and more connected to the outdoors.

While this window is large, it doesn’t compromise the insulation of the box itself, allowing the living space to stay a consistent temperature.

Outdoor Kitchen Setup

The exterior kitchen includes:

  • A Kenyon electric grill for high-quality outdoor cooking

  • A stainless steel sink with water hookups

  • A sleek bamboo countertop that’s as durable as it is beautiful

This whole setup is easy to setup and take down as sits on sliders with the sink and countertop that fold in and out of the system.

Indoor Appliances + Amenities

For those extended off-grid stays, the build features:

  • A Daewoo washer and dryer unit

  • A full-sized fridge and freezer

  • A convertible dining space that turns into a bed via a remote-controlled drop-down table

  • A/C units in both the cab and living area for climate control

  • Water filtration system allowing you to pull from stream water when needed.

Gear Storage and Exterior Systems

One of the most exciting features? A remote-controlled rack that lowers all the way to the ground. It’s perfect for carrying bikes, adventure gear, or additional supplies—easy to access and strong enough for serious payloads.

Other standout exterior features:

  • Rooftop solar panels to power your systems sustainably

  • Custom rooftop storage rack with space for a mattress and cup holders—ideal for stargazing or outdoor lounging

  • A 100-gallon diesel tank, giving you serious range between fuel stops

Built for True Off-Grid Living

Every inch of this expedition truck was designed for self-sufficiency. It includes:

  • A filtered water system

  • Freshwater tanks to support long stays off the grid

  • A robust electrical system powered by solar, batteries, and alternator charging

It’s a home on wheels built to thrive in the wild—no RV parks or hookups needed.
