The Expedition Truck Layout We Love (and Why)

Our Favorite Expedition Truck Layout (And Why It Works So Well)

At ACME Overland, every build is custom—and every client gets to decide exactly how they want their layout to look and function. But after building many different configurations, there's one layout we keep coming back to for its balance of comfort, function, and space optimization.

It’s the layout featured in Obelix and Leo, two of our most iconic builds. Here’s why we think it’s one of the best expedition truck layouts you can choose.

Cab Pass-Through

A pass-through between the cab and the living quarters is one of the most underrated features in a custom expedition truck. It enhances convenience and safety, allowing you to move between spaces without ever stepping outside. If you’re traveling with pets, this feature is also a game-changer, giving them free access throughout the vehicle.

Large Bathroom

Placing the bathroom directly behind the cab (and connected to the pass-through) unlocks the opportunity for a more spacious bathroom layout. That means a larger shower, more cabinet space, and easier organization—all of which make a huge difference in day-to-day comfort on the road.

Functional Kitchen

This layout allows for maximum counter space along one wall, with upper and lower cabinetry for smart storage. We always include a large, deep sink with a custom cover so you don’t have to sacrifice usable prep space. Right next to the entrance, we position the fridge/freezer for easy access—essential for long-term, off-grid living.

Convertible Dining Area

Across from the kitchen is the dining area, complete with an automated lowering table that converts the space into an additional bed or lounge area. Multi-use spaces like this are essential in expedition vehicles, especially when you want to make the most of every square foot.

Rear Sleeping Areas

Placing the bed in the rear of the vehicle allows for a large, comfortable sleep space. In Obelix, the client wanted to sleep north-south (instead of the more common east-west configuration), so we incorporated sliding bed extensions with cushion inserts to accommodate that request. This layout also leaves room for additional cabinetry or windows—customized to your needs.

Rear Garage Storage

Often overlooked but absolutely essential, the garage area beneath the bed offers critical storage. In this layout, we typically install a full pull-out drawer system for easy access to your gear. The garage can also be outfitted with modular storage systems to support your off-grid lifestyle, from recovery gear to tools and spare parts.

Why This Layout Works

This configuration balances walkability, smart storage, and comfortable living, all while keeping your build efficient and ready for rugged use. It’s our go-to for a reason—but we know every traveler is different.

If you're dreaming up your perfect expedition truck, we’re here to help you design a layout that works for your lifestyle and adventures.
