Expedition Truck Timeline: How Long Does a Custom Build Really Take?
1: Importing the Truck (Several Weeks – 2 Months)
Not every expedition truck needs to be imported, but many of the most popular platforms—like the Mercedes-Benz trucks we’ve worked with—are retired work trucks from Europe.
If you’re importing, the truck must be 25 years or older due to U.S. import laws. That alone can add some time, as the process requires paperwork, shipping, and customs clearance.
That said, there are plenty of great options available right here in the States too, such as Acela, Isuzu, and Unimog. If you’re not sure which direction to go, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help you choose the right platform for your build.
2: Refurbishing (1–2 Months)
Depending on the condition and origin of your truck, some refurbishment might be needed before we begin outfitting. This could mean:
A 4x4 conversion for trucks that weren’t originally built for rugged terrain.
Removing the original cargo box or other factory-installed features.
Mechanical updates or modifications to prepare the truck for its new life as an expedition rig.
Not all trucks require refurbishment, but for those that do, you should plan for an additional month or two.
3: Outfitting in Our Shop (8–12 Months)
This is the stage where your truck really begins to transform. Over the course of 8 to 12 months, our team will:
Finalize custom designs for your living space.
Begin the build-out of cabinetry, plumbing, electrical, and other systems.
Install finishing touches, appliances, and comfort features to make the rig feel like home.
It’s a detailed, deliberate process that ensures your expedition truck is not only functional, but also comfortable and built to last.
Why the Wait Is Worth It
At first, this timeline may sound long—but building an expedition vehicle is not an overnight project, and that’s exactly the point. Each day is spent carefully crafting a rig that’s designed around you—your lifestyle, your adventures, your vision.
And trust us: once you’re driving down the open road in your finished expedition truck, the time it took to get there will feel like nothing.
