Project Spotlight: The Isuzu FTR "Land Yacht" Custom Expedition Build

While our shop here in Salt Lake City stays busy custom-building multiple elite expedition trucks at any given time, one massive, standout project has captured a huge share of our team's pride over the recent months: transforming a brand-new, commercial-grade chassis into the ultimate custom expedition vehicle. From the initial computer renders to the final coat of paint, we built this rig for a client who demanded zero compromises on off-grid capability or 5-star luxury.

We affectionately call this build the "Land Yacht."

Choosing the Ultimate Foundation: Isuzu FTR

When people look into building an overland truck, they often look at classic options like a Mercedes Unimog or a converted 4x4 Sprinter van. But for a true heavy-duty build with maximum living space, the Isuzu FTR (F-Series) is a masterclass in platform engineering. It is Isuzu's largest platform, offering a perfect intersection of commercial-grade payload capacity, high dependability, and incredible maneuverability thanks to its cab-over design.

However, a factory FTR is built for city streets, not remote trails. To transform it into a true off-road camper truck, the chassis underwent a massive mechanical overhaul before it ever reached our shop floor.

The ACME Foundation

1. 4WD CONVERSION: transformed to full 4-wheel drive for ultimate traction

2. AIRBAG SUSPENSION: replaced rigid stock leaf springs for a cloud-like highway ride

3. 395 TIRES & RIMS: Hutchinson deadlock rims + 395 off-road tires for clearance

Why the Chassis Stage Matters: Commercial truck suspension is built to haul concrete or steel box loads, resulting in a brutally stiff ride when unladen. By integrating advanced airbag suspension during the process, we protect both your custom interior cabinetry and your physical comfort during 1,000-mile highway stretches.

Exterior Utility & Off-Grid Architecture

Once the rolling chassis arrived in Salt Lake, our team began fabricating the exterior utility from the ground up. An off-grid expedition vehicle needs to act as a shield against the elements while functioning as a self-contained mobile base camp.

We engineered and custom-fabricated:

• Front-End Utility: Heavy-duty forward bumper, custom-fitted brush guards, and integrated roof rack over the cab.

• Sleek Aerodynamics: Custom one-off fenders and matching side skirts that seamlessly bridge the cab to the custom living habitat.

• The Rear Rack: A massive, remote-controlled hydraulic rear cargo rack designed to carry heavy gear, spare tires, or even a dirt bike without breaking a sweat.

• Exterior Kitchen: An integrated outdoor entertainment space featuring a premium Kenyon grill station for open-air gourmet cooking.

Interior Layout — 5-Star Luxury Off the Grid

Step inside the living habitat, and the commercial truck completely disappears. The interior layout was strategically mapped to maximize spatial flow, storage, and natural light while hosting premium residential appliances.

The Galley

Full chef's kitchen layout equipped with high-end appliances and ample prep space.

Dining & Work Lounge

Comfortable booths paired with an editing monitor/TV. This entire space dynamically converts into a secondary bed for guests.

The Master Suite

A permanent, luxurious Queen-sized bed situated at the rear. With ample closet space located at the head. 

The Full Dry Bath

Located forward for easy access, featuring a completely isolated stand-up shower separate from the incinerating toilet—no wet-bath inconveniences here.

Utility Closet

Home to an onboard Daewoo mini washer/dryer unit, making indefinite remote travel truly self-sustained.

Powering Infinite Exploration

To support the air conditioning, kitchen appliances, and washer/dryer without ever needing a noisy generator or a shore power plug, we engineered a world-class power matrix:

• -1080W Roof-Mounted Solar Array

• -Massive Lithium-Ion Battery Bank

This system continuously collects and stores power, giving our client the freedom to park in total isolation for weeks at a time while living in absolute climate-controlled luxury.
